Best Places to Bike in Ann Arbor
How will you spend your National Bike Month? It’s a great opportunity to get fit, enjoy the scenery around you, and use less gas to get where you need to go so you can reduce your carbon footprint. If you’re on vacation in Ann Arbor this May, you don’t have to worry about missing out on all those cycling opportunities. With 79 miles of bike lanes throughout the city, we’ve been twice named a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly City by the League of American Bicyclists. Just bring your bike or rent a bike and check out all the bike paths and popular spots that the city has to offer. Here are a few of our favorite spots.
Border-to-Border Trail
Ann Arbor sits smack in the middle of the border-to-border trail — often called the B2B trail by local cyclists — that connects Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, and Dexter. It’s 20 miles in total and offers lovely views of the Huron River as you bike. The trail is a mixture of gravel, asphalt, and boardwalk. You can drive to Dexter and start from the beginning, looping back to Ann Arbor after you’ve reached Ypsilanti, or you can go in either direction from Ann Arbor. This is perhaps the most popular bike trail in the area.
Botanical Gardens
If you take the border-to-border trail, you’ll be in the perfect position to bike to the Botanical Gardens, a well-loved destination among cyclists in the area. You can reward yourself for a morning workout by exploring the garden, full of fascinating flora that blooms all year long. There’s also the Nichols Arboretum, which will give you almost the feeling of losing yourself in the woods. It’s a nice pit stop before you continue on your way, or even an end goal if you’re interested in a shorter but more scenic bike ride.
Bluffs Nature Area
Looking for something more rugged and challenging? Check out Bluffs Nature Area with nearly 40 acres of walking and biking trails. You’ll be surrounded by tall oaks, hickories, ash trees, and ravines, so it’s a good spot for those who like to take nature photography as well. The trails offer a mixture of terrains, so you’ll be sure to get an invigorating bike ride here. If you need to break, stop in one of the open fields to take in the view or enjoy a picnic.
